Women at Work: Can Startups Level the Playing Field? [INFOGRAPHIC]

0 Comments/ in Business, entrepreneurs, Startups, trending, Uncategorized / by Stephanie Buck
April 16, 2012

A woman’s place in the modern workforce is a hotly debated issue these days. Most likely that’s because the figures surrounding female pay rate, education and business experience don’t parallel male statistics.

The infographic below, based on compiled research from the University of North Carolina’s online MBA program, details where women fall in the grand (business) scheme of things. The graphic notes that only 5% of startups are owned by women, and that only 3-5% of all women-owned businesses receive venture capital funding.

On the other hand, women-operated, venture-backed companies have 12% higher revenues. With those kinds of statistics, one would think that companies would welcome high-level female execs; however, 40% of large public companies worldwide have no women board members.

It’s not all bad, though. Women are founding businesses at 1.5 times the national average. And we’re already starting to see the results: Female leaders like Arianna Huffington and Sheryl Sandberg are proving that female perspective can play an incredibly powerful role in business.
