Telefónica launches Tu Me app: brings free VoIP calling and messaging to the iPhone

Tu Me app

We don’t understand exactly what European big-hitter Telefónica is set to gain from its new app. Free VoIP calls and messaging doesn’t sound like a massive money-spinner for a company that steers several of Europe’s biggest mobile carriers, but that’s what its new app is offering. Tu Me can connect through either WiFi or your own phone signal and throws in some location-sharing features for good measure. The app still will still find it tough to break through on the iPhone, which already has plenty of options, include VoIP champ Skype and the home-grown iMessage. According to The Verge, an Android version is already in the pipeline, but if you’re driving an iPhone, you can grab the free download from the App Store now.

AT&T's HTC One X gets rooted, catches up with the global gang

No sooner did the international variant of the One X reveal its source code, now the AT&T version has landed itself an unofficial root. Better still, the folks over at xda-developers have already squeezed the occasionally laborious process into a one-click install. For those not in the know, this doesn’t mean an unlocked bootloader, which is still wrapped up in AT&T red tape. Root meddling types can hit up the source for the necessary files. Just, be careful — that’s some pricey polycarbonate and the Galaxy S III‘s still some weeks away.

Sony Xperia GX packs 13MP camera and 4.6-inch HD display, joined by Xperia SX to offer LTE in Japan

0 Comments/ in Uncategorized / by Mat Smith
May 9, 2012

Sony’s announced its first two LTE-capable phones for its Japanese customers — and there’s two of ‘em. The Xperia GX is up first, with a 720p 4.6-inch display squeezed in alongside a new 13-megapixel camera — a first for Sony’s mobile family, and presumably its new CMOS sensor. A 1.5 GHz dual-core processor ensures it should all tick along nicely, while the hardware design follows the curves of last year’s Xperia Arc, this time with a matte finish. The camera upgrade and huge screen makes a good case for this to be Sony’s new flagship device — mere months since the Xperia S debuted in Europe — and before the Xperia Ion has even had chance to launch in the US.

It’s joined by the Xperia SX, which Sony claims is the world’s lightest LTE capable handset, weighing in at just under 100g. It packs a smaller 3.7-inch screen with the same Mobile Bravia engine found on its bigger brother — and the rest of Sony’s recent handsets. It’s joined by a 1.5GHz dual-core processor (although there’s no specifics on what type just yet), a more standard 8-megapixel camera and it wouldn’t be a Japanese phone without infrared connectivity, mobile wallet and a mobile TV — they’re all built-in. Both phones will launch in black and white, and Android fans can rest easy, as they’ll both arrive with Android 4.0 installed when they hit stores in Japan this summer.

[Thanks Thorzten]

Sub-$1500 Kingmax 1TB SSD spotted in Japan

Terabytes. We all want them — especially if they’re served solid-state. But if you’re not quite ready to pony up for OCZ’s Octane SSD 1TB model, you might want to take a trip to Japan. KingMax‘s SMU25 Client Pro 1TB SSD has been spotted for 119,000 yen (roughly $1,490), shaving a good chunk off the price of its OCZ rival, although there is a trade-off. The Kingmax drive doesn’t quite catch up to the Octane performance-wise, with 250MB/s read speeds bested by 460MB/s on the pricier drive and 200 MB/s write speeds trumped by 330MB/s on OCZ’s model. According to Bit-tech, there’s no plans for the drive to leave the Land of the Rising Sun for US just yet, although the Taiwanese manufacturer is already doing business in other parts of Asia so you might just get lucky if you shop around. Its full spec list is housed at source below.

99Bill smartphone card reader pushes mobile payments for China, pretends it’s never heard of Square

Jostling for attention among a crowd of China-focused smartphone card readers, 99Bill’s card reader has now been officially revealed. It plugs into your headphone jack and communicates with apps on both iOS and Android. The familiar-looking reader supports both passcode and signature security — China matches several European countries where passcode cards are the more common option. The company has already hooked up with three insurance companies, but it’s keeping quiet on the rates it’ll charge per transaction and any further expansion plans. 99Bills lays down why it should be your go-to choice for smartphone payments in mainland China right after the break.

NEC announces Ivy Bridge processors for some, not all, of its series refreshes

Ivy Bridge continues to subsume its aging Sandy brother, this time as part of NEC‘s refresh of both its laptop and desktop families. However, only two machines have been gifted Intel’s third-generation processors. The ValueStar L desktop series arrives with a Core i7-3770S at 3.1GHz, accompanied by a 2TB HDD and a 23-inch display. The LaVie L series packs a Core i7-3770S clocked at 2.3GHz, alongside a 15.6-inch screen, 1TB hard-disk, USB 3.0 port and digital TV tuner — well, it is Japan. NEC expects both models (alongside the renewed LaVie S, E, M and ValueStar W and N series) to hit Japanese stores later this month.

Was it everything you imagined? The Galaxy S III didn’t really slap us silly with hardware spectacle or a particularly brave design and instead plowed into software additions and contextual features. There was plenty to chew over and plenty of discussion followed its big reveal, spilling out over the last few days — this was a big launch for not only Samsung but Android itself. We’ve got the six editors who spent time with the device to offer up their own thoughts on this new Android Olympian.

Pebble watch Bluetooth 4.0

What are you going to do when you get an unprecedented response from your new Kickstarter project? You throw in some extra features to keep your new fans happy. Allerta, the same company behind the InPulse smartwatch, has announced that its new Pebble smartwatch will now arrive with low-power Bluetooth 4.0 compatibility. The watches will still interact with Bluetooth 2.1, but inclusion of the latest version should ensure a better degree of future-proofing, with a view to hooking up with wireless heart monitors in the near future. The new feature will be built into the watches ahead of its release and enabled with a later software update. Better still, the makers promise that these Bluetooth plans have been in the pipeline for a while and shouldn’t affect the watch’s launch date.

Toyota RAV4 EV priced up at $49,800, arriving in California 'late summer'

It’s been two years since we first heard of Toyota’s electric vehicle plans and the company’s finally ready to talk turkey on pricing. Announced at Los Angeles’ Electric Vehicle Symposium yesterday, the “fully equipped” RAV4 EV will arrive before the end of the year for a few hundred shy of 50,000 bucks. The EV will reach up to 100 miles on a single charge, which can be reportedly replenished in around six hours from a 240V charger, while LED and halogen headlights are the latest design additions. The RAV4 will go up for sale in Sacramento, San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego — if you’re somewhere in California, you have a shot of getting one. Toyota’s got all the details in a press release right after the break.

Nokia City Lens arrives for trials on Lumia devices, augments your reality (video)

Nokia’s rolling more of its experimental Symbian projects out to its Windows Phone hardware and City Lens is the latest to arrive in its immaculately-kept Beta Labs. Not to be confused with existing efforts, it throws together an augmented reality interface to give you a better overview of the best places to eat in town, and those tourist hotspots you simply must see. It’ll then connect with your current location (which can be shared with your your contacts) and even offer up directions if you’re in need. The app remains in testing for now, but you can help Nokia out by donning your labcoat and registering for its Beta Labs at the source below.

Fujifilm FinePix XP170 camera rebuffs water, dust and cold, cuddles up with iOS and Android (video)

FinePix XP170

Fujifilm’s latest rugged point-and-shoot has pulled together some pretty standard specs with some more contemporary connectivity features, all in a hardy shell. The 14-megapixel CMOS sensor is paired with 5x zoom lens, while the rubberized lug is capable of 1080p video, and can increase video capture up to 240 fps at 320 x 240 resolution. Available in blue or orange, the device should survive up to 10 meters of water, a two meter drop and still work at -10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees Fahrenheit). We’re not sure if that’s all at once. Sharing with mobile devices requires Fujifilm‘s own Android or iOS app and some semblance of a WiFi signal. The FinePix XP170 will sidle up into stores next month for $280, but until then, Fujifilm’s got a video to demo those new wireless transfer functions — if that’s your thing, you can check it out right after the break.

HTC One X spills its source code, but only for its quad-core half

Not to be derailed by the “restricted” bootloader found on its US variant, One X users elsewhere can now potter around kernel version 2.6.39 and its unlocked bootloader. It’s the latest release from HTC Dev, which now houses bootloaders for phones as far old as the venerable Dream, and means that the official channel has caught up with its eager modding community. Well, it’s just a couple of months late. Those looking to load their boots can hit up the source below.

HTC has announced that it’ll be showcasing the One V at CTIA this week, but also, more importantly, that the final piece of the One family puzzle will arrive on “a variety of US partners later this summer.” Nothing more concrete than that at the moment, although we reckon a handful of regional carriers might be tempted to stock the hardy Legend tribute smartphone.

Verizon officially announces HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE

Well, this isn’t a surprise. Verizon has now gone official with its mouthful of a smart phone, and it does exactly what it says in its name: that is, LTE connectivity. Alongside it, you’ll find Sense 4, Android 4.0 and a 4-inch Super LCD qHD screen. Rounding off those digits is a dual-core Snapdragon S4 that’s clocked at 1.2GHz, matching its just below its sibling, the 1.5GHz One S. Power-wise, the Droid Incredible 4G LTE packs a 1,700mAh battery, which should provide ample power to shoot away with the rear-facing 8-megapixel shooter. Storage for all those photos, meanwhile, can be increased by up to 32GB through microSD, although we haven’t been given specifics on built-in storage yet. Verizon’s press release is right after the break, while you can expect the phone itself to appear in stores over the next few weeks.

Update: The One S runs on a dual-core 1.5GHz processor. Apologies for the confusion.
