Huawei 10-inch MediaPad hands-on (video)

Sadly, when this gorgeous slab of glass and silicon was unveiled at MWC, Huawei wouldn’t let us put our greasy hands on it — and with good reason, the spectacular panel on the MediaPad 10 is a bit of a fingerprint magnet. But, we’re happy to report that the company trotted out the goods for Pepcom’s event at CTIA. We took the device for a pretty thorough spin and, despite being saddled with software still in the development stage, came away thoroughly impressed. The 10-inch 1920 x 1200 IPS display is one of the most gorgeous screens to ever grace a tablet. Sure, it’s not quite “new” iPad levels of pixel density, but it certainly puts most of its potential competitors to shame. The primarily aluminum body feels great in the hand, striking a great balance between weight and a premium feel. At only 8.8mm thin it’s no surprise that it comes in at just 13 ounces (roughly), all while packing a 6,600 mAh battery.

The in-house developed 1.5Ghz quad-core K3 Balong CPU inside is given a pretty decent workout by the rough built of Ice Cream Sandwich on board, that was mostly stock but had the sporadic OEM flourish such as different icons and keyboard. Most actions, such as playing back HD video and launching the browser were smooth enough, but we did notice the occasional stutter and pause. We took some time to put it through a few of our standard issue benchmarks, and turned up some mixed results. The 2,696.7ms it took to chug through the SunSpider benchmark left us standing around awkwardly at the Huawei table, while the 2,737 on Quadrant and 30.1 fps in NenaMark 2 were respectable, though not mind-blowing. But, again, we’ll stress that this is still running a development version of the OS. Check out the gallery below and the video after the break for a full tour.

sprint htc evo 4g lte guide

Whether or not Sprint’s version of HTC’s One X is indeed shipping on May 18th remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure: it’ll almost definitely hit store shelves prior to Sprint’s LTE network going live. Following the Galaxy Nexus’ footsteps in that regard, the EVO 4G LTE seems to have no shame in its game, and the 219 page user manual has floated out for those interested in getting a head start on understanding their future superphone. The PDF’s linked in the source for your perusal, but don’t go digging for any of life’s secrets. Well, there is a section on Private Browsing, but you know….

Hands-on with the Nyx Mobile Lyuba Max and Fun mockups

When PR reps have something they think is truly special, things can get a little cloak and dagger. While we were hanging around the Nyx Mobile booth, a rep quietly sneaked up on us, to offer a glimpse of two new handset his company is working on. When we enthusiastically agreed (after our heart rate dropped), he led aside — away from prying eyes — and produced a pair devices, delicately wrapped in a silk handkerchief, from his suit’s inside pocket. We won’t lie, things got a tad disappointing when we realized they were non-functioning mockups, but if the company can pull of these frame-less designs we’ll be quite impressed. Due to begin manufacturing within the next two or three months, the Lyuba Max and Lyuba Fun aim to make bezels a thing of the past. The lack of a frame on the five-inch, 63mm wide Max makes it even trimmer than the significantly smaller-screened Galaxy Nexus, which checks in at about 68mm wide. While we won’t make too many judgments on the feel and design based on a non-functioning prototype we actually found the Max easier to hold and reach all corners of the screen with a single hand than the Nexus or the Note. The four-inch Fun, felt a good half-inch smaller than its specs — more akin to an iPhone in size.

Both devices will come rocking Ice Cream Sandwich, but it’ll be powered by some rather mid-range hardware. Both will pack a 1.2GHz processor, likely of the single-core variety, and neither is boasting impressive screen resolutions. The Max is checking in with a decidedly dated 800 x 480 LCD, while the Fun drops to a lowly HVGA panel. Check out the gallery below for some images of the mockups.

Huawei Ascend Y200 hands-on at CTIA 2012

Huawei’s at CTIA Wireless 2012 in New Orleans, and we got to spend a little time with one the company’s newest devices geared toward the youth and first-time smartphone users: the Ascend Y200. Power users need not apply here, as the Gingerbread handset offers a not-so-tantalizing 3.5-inch HVGA display, 1,400mAh battery, 3.2MP fixed-focus camera and 1GHz Qualcomm MSM7625A single-core processor (the listed spec here is different from the 800MHz spec we’ve heard previously, which makes us wonder if this has been overclocked for the US market). It also features a lot of fingerprints, courtesy of its glossy plastic build. The UI of the Y200 closely resembles most Huawei Gingerbread phones we’ve played with, such as the Honor. All told, the Ascend Y200 is decidedly low-end, with some European venues offering the device for €100. We may see it on a few prepaid carriers in the US, but this certainly won’t be of any interest to those who crave the latest and greatest smartphones.

HTC EVO V 4G (Virgin Mobile USA) hands-on

Image

Does that handset above look familiar to you? It should because you’ve seen it once before when Sprint debuted it as the EVO 3D. This time, however, the phone that failed to ignite much consumer interest is back with a rebranded moniker — EVO V 4G — a new home on Virgin Mobile, that 3D screen and a $299 price. We managed to get some hands-on time with the device and for better or for worse, it’s still packing the same list of specs: 4.3-inch qHD display, 1.3 megapixel front-facing / dual 5 megapixel rear cameras, dual-core 1.2GHz processor buffered by 1GB RAM and packing 4GB of internal storage with an additional 8GB furnished by an included microSD card.

Cosmetically, nothing has changed from its postpaid to prepaid journey, so you’re still getting that same bulky build, jarring button layout for the 3D to 2D slider and the three quarter grooved plastic back. What counts, however, is the software it runs, namely Android 4.0.3. Yes, right out of the gate the company intends to ship this 4G WiMAX device (sorry, it’s not future-proofed for LTE) with a Sense 3.6 skin running atop Ice Cream Sandwich. It’s not HTC’s latest lightweight 4.0 UX, but for the market it’s aimed at, it’ll do just fine. Check out our gallery below for additional shots of this fat smartphone ahead of its planned June launch.

Samsung Galaxy S III wrap-up

Was it everything you imagined? The Galaxy S III didn’t really slap us silly with hardware spectacle or a particularly brave design and instead plowed into software additions and contextual features. There was plenty to chew over and plenty of discussion followed its big reveal, spilling out over the last few days — this was a big launch for not only Samsung but Android itself. We’ve got the six editors who spent time with the device to offer up their own thoughts on this new Android Olympian.

Pebble watch gets updated to Bluetooth 4.0 before it even arrives

Pebble watch Bluetooth 4.0

What are you going to do when you get an unprecedented response from your new Kickstarter project? You throw in some extra features to keep your new fans happy. Allerta, the same company behind the InPulse smartwatch, has announced that its new Pebble smartwatch will now arrive with low-power Bluetooth 4.0 compatibility. The watches will still interact with Bluetooth 2.1, but inclusion of the latest version should ensure a better degree of future-proofing, with a view to hooking up with wireless heart monitors in the near future. The new feature will be built into the watches ahead of its release and enabled with a later software update. Better still, the makers promise that these Bluetooth plans have been in the pipeline for a while and shouldn’t affect the watch’s launch date.

VeriFone outs Sail mobile payment system, gives Square the evil eye

VeriFone has decided that calling out claimed security holes and focusing on enterprise-level payment options aren’t enough to take on Square. Sail goes more directly for Square’s jugular, using its own plug-in dongle to handle major credit card payments in your local coffee shop or a mid-sized outlet. The VeriFone party trick comes through having multiple payment options, where shopkeeps can either choose to pay a flat 2.7 percent cut of every sale, or shell out a $10 monthly fee to lower the transactional take to 1.95 percent. Programming interfaces will let you hook in deals from social networks, too. And as you might expect, the company is still keen to tie Sail to its traditional payment systems, opening the door to NFC readers as well as other payment hardware that isn’t quite as mobile. Stores with iPhones will be the only ones using the free Sail mobile apps and readers at first, but Android- and iPad-toting entrepreneurs will have their alternative to Square or PayPal Here as soon as the end of May.

Lenovo launches four Android-powered K-series Smart TVs in China this month

We first saw Lenovo’s Android 4.0 tellymabob back at CES, now the firm is getting ready to unleash the full K-series of Smart TVs on China. Four models are on offer, the 55-inch K91 and K81 models, along with a 42-inch version of the latter and another at this size — the K71. You may remember that Ice Cream Sandwich is running on a dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon CPU and Lenovo claims the interface is a mix of touch, air mouse, gravity sensor, smart keyboard and conventional remote — lots more to lose down the back of the couch, then. The firm’s joint venture with SMG’s BesTV — iSmartv — will provide on demand HD content, and its “Le Store” developer community will serve up the apps — with over 1,000 claimed to be available already. Prices will range from 6,499 RMB to 14,999 RMB (about $1030 to $2370) and should be in stores across China this month.

Hands-on with Kyocera Rise, an Android 4.0 smartphone with a QWERTY keyboard (video)

Hands-on with Kyocera Rise, an Android 4.0 smartphone with a QWERTY keyboard (video)

Kyocera is looking to regain a foothold in the US smartphone market, and curiously enough, it’s doing so by catering to niche audiences. First we saw the Hydro, a waterproof handset, and alongside it is the Rise, which features a sliding QWERTY keyboard. Both phones are built for CDMA networks, although Kyocera has yet to announce carrier availability for either.

Spec-wise, the Rise is very similar to the Hydro, and this extends to the OS. In our brief time with the phone, we were treated to a largely vanilla interpretation of Ice Cream Sandwich, which makes the Rise a bit of a rare breed in the QWERTY world — hopefully its future carrier doesn’t dictate huge alterations. The phone features a Qualcomm MSM8655 SoC with a 1GHz CPU, a 3.5-inch, 480 x 320 IPS LCD display, a 3.2 megapixel camera with LED flash and a 1,500 mAh battery. When compared to other QWERTY sliders, the handset itself is rather compact and fit nicely in our hand. We were similarly quite fond of the sliding mechanism on the Rise, which felt natural and provided just enough resistance. The four-row keyboard is altogether forgettable, but it should serve those who insist upon physical keys just fine. Our biggest gripe about the Rise, however, is its low-res display, which seems like quite a misstep — even for a budget device.

In terms of storage, you’ll find 512MB of RAM, 2GB built-in and a 2GB microSD card. The Rise also features 802.11n (WiFi), Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and EV-DO Rev. A. It’s safe to say that Kyocera is targeting budget audiences with the Rise, but the strategy may work to its advantage if other carriers fail to keep their QWERTY sliders up-to-date with the latest version of Android. You’ll find our hands-on video after the break.

Hands-on with Kyocera Hydro, a waterproof Android 4.0 smartphone (video)

Hands-on with Kyocera Hydro, a waterproof Android 4.0 smartphone (video)

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a Kyocera smartphone for the US market, and if you’ll recall, its previous two attempts — the Milano and Echo — didn’t manage to sway many consumers. Today, the company is adding two new Android handsets to the deck: the Hydro and Rise. True to its name, the Hydro plays off of Kyocera’s experience in the waterproof segment, and while it’s not mil-spec, the phone’s able to withstand submersion at depths of up to one meter for a half-hour. The Hydro is a CDMA handset, although Kyocera is keeping the carrier close to its chest.

The Hydro will ship with Ice Cream Sandwich, and we’re pleased to report that the interface is largely unmolested, save for Kyocera’s app to conserve battery life — whether the carrier dictates future changes remains to be seen. Beyond the OS and the waterproof aspect, however, it’s rather humdrum in the spec department. It features a Qualcomm MSM8655 SoC with a 1GHz CPU, a 3.5-inch, 480 x 320 display, a 3.2 megapixel camera with LED flash and a 1,500 mAh battery. Because the screen is an IPS LCD, the quality is definitely a step-above your run-of-the-mill TFT-LCD mainstays, although it’s hard to ignore the low-res image quality. The Hydro also offers 512MB of RAM, 2GB of built-in storage and a 2GB microSD card. In terms of connectivity, you’ll find 802.11n (WiFi), Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and EV-DO Rev. A. The handset itself is comfortable to hold, though its plasticky build materials reinforce the fact that it’s a low-end handset. While the Hydro doesn’t blaze any new trails, it may very well be suitable for those on a budget who’d like a phone that can handle life’s accidents. Follow the break for our hands-on video.

HTC Droid Incredible 4G Announced, Headed To Verizon [PICS]

May 8, 2012

HTC and Verizon announced the HTC Droid Incredible 4G on Monday, the third phone in the Droid Incredible line.

The HTC Droid Incredible 4G has a 4-inch Super LCD display, and 1.2 GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor. The phone has an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera for shooting pics, and can also capture photos while simultaneously shooting high-definition video. A forward-facing camera is also available for video chatting.

The phone will ship running the latest version of Android – Ice Cream Sandwich – as well as the latest version of HTC Sense, the software that HTC puts over Android. Both the HTC One S (available on T-Mobile) and HTC One X (available on AT&T) run Ice Cream Sandwich and Sense 4.0 as well.

The One X and S both have unibody designs with no removable battery or expandable memory. The Droid Incredible 4G strays from that trend, giving you the ability to swap out your battery and offering microSD expansion up to 32GB.

While Verizon has announced the phone will be coming to its network β€œin the coming weeks,” it hasn’t announced an actual release date for the handset or any pricing information.

We had a chance to spend a few minutes with the HTC Droid Incredible 4G at a Verizon event on Monday evening. Check out the gallery below for some pictures of the handset, and let us know what you think about the phone in the comments.

Escort has long enabled heavy footed — but ticket shy — drivers a little more freedom with just how quickly they’re able to complete the daily commute. Escort’s SmartRadar is set to extend that fun and cut the cord by including Bluetooth connectivity in the detector itself and enabling users to have a mostly out of sight installation — as your handset becomes the interface to the radar. The SmartRadar integrates with Escort’s Live ticket protection app which shares other users of the system’s radar / laser hits and updates them in real time on your phone’s display. Check the gallery for some pics of it installed behind the rearview mirror and a simulated laser notification.

Toshiba Excite 10 ICS tablet goes on sale, prices start at $450 for 16GB model

It’s been a little less than a month since Toshiba unveiled its trio of Ice Cream Sandwich slates, the Excite 7.7, 10 and 13, and starting today you’ll be able to grab one of these for yourself. Unlike we’d previously heard, though, Toshiba’s pricing the 16GB, 10.1-inch Excite at $449.99 — which is 50 bucks less than what we were told back when it was announced. Meanwhile, if you’re looking for the more spacious 32GB and 64GB models, you’ll have to drop about $530 and $650, respectively. In exchange for that cash, you’ll be getting an NVIDIA Tegra 3 SoC CPU and a taste of vanilla-flavored Android 4.0, among other things. We know Toshiba’s got you excited, so head over to one of the source links below to pop your order in. Otherwise you can wait until the other two slabs go on sale next month.

HTC One X spills its source code, but only for its quad-core half

Not to be derailed by the “restricted” bootloader found on its US variant, One X users elsewhere can now potter around kernel version 2.6.39 and its unlocked bootloader. It’s the latest release from HTC Dev, which now houses bootloaders for phones as far old as the venerable Dream, and means that the official channel has caught up with its eager modding community. Jury Issues Partial Verdict in Google-Oracle Trial, Big Questions Still at Stake

0 Comments/ in android, Google, trending, Uncategorized / by Christina Warren
May 7, 2012

android-sign-600

A federal jury has issued a partial verdict in the Oracle/Google lawsuit.

Although the jury found that Google infringed on Oracle’s Java tools, it deadlocked around the question of whether Google proved that its use of Java constituted “fair use.”

Oracle sued Google in 2010 over its use of the Java programming language and software tools. Oracle acquired Java when it purchased Sun Microsystems in 2010.

Today’s verdict only encompasses the first part of the case — there are two more parts to come. As Mashable Tech Editor Pete Pachal pointed out last month, nothing less than the future of Android is at stake in this case.

Although Sun open-sourced parts of Java to be used without a licensing agreement, it required a licensing agreement for use with mobile devices. To get around this requirement, Google created its own software that would allow Java execution of Java code on mobile devices, but in such a way that it wasn’t using the traditional Java virtual machines licensed for mobile devices.

The big question for this phase of the trial was whether Google infringed on Oracle’s Java patents and tools and if that infringement was allowed based on rules of fair use.

The jury found that Google did infringe on the use of the tools and APIs held by Oracle, however, it could not come to a decision regarding the fair use claim.

Because the fair use claim is so integral to future aspects of the case, both sides are pushing for more clarification. Google has motioned for a mistrial. Meanwhile, Oracle has motioned for the presiding judge in the case to issue his own verdict. The judge will make his ruling on both matters later in the week.

Oracle hasn’t issued a comment on the ruling, but in a statement to the Mercury News, Google said, “We appreciate the jury’s efforts, and know that fair use and infringement are two sides of the same coin. The core issue is whether the APIs here are copyrightable, and that’s for the court to decide. We expect to prevail on this issue and Oracle’s other claims.”

Samsung Galaxy S III gets a Canadian girlfriend as Bell, Rogers, Telus, Wind Mobile line up

If you live north of the 49th parallel, you’re no doubt frustrated that Samsung teased a summer launch for the Galaxy S III in North America but made no initial mention of its Canadian plans. Don’t fret, as virtually every Canadian carrier and its mother has now pledged to carry the giant Android 4.0 smartphone while you’re on your summer vacation — the first carrier commitments in North America that we’ve seen. Bell, Rogers, Telus, Virgin Mobile and Wind Mobile have all stepped up as national providers, while regional carriers such as SaskTel and Videotron have also signed on. The Galaxy S III is a special milestone for Virgin, as it’s the first 4G LTE phone on the Bell-run budget network. We’re still waiting for Mobilicity and other cellular services to hop on the Galaxy S III bandwagon, and details like pricing and exact ship dates are still elusive, but odds are that Canucks will have a wide choice of carriers when the 4.8-inch flagship hits stores. Update: Sure enough, Mobilicity is also onboard, which along with Wind Mobile makes it pretty clear that T-Mobile-friendly AWS frequencies are baked in.

PSA: Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE up for pre-order today, release date still unknown

In case you took a pass on that Sprint-branded GNex or the LG Viper 4G in order to wait it out for HTC’s EVO 4G LTE, well, now’s the time to get your wallet ready and unleash the cash. As promised, The Now Network has the LTE-friendly EVO priced at $199.99 (50 bucks less on Wirefly) with a beloved two-year contract, while those ineligible for an upgrade will have to shell out around $550. That being said, chances are you won’t get to surf those Long Term Evolution waves when you get device, but at least you’ll be all set once the rollout finally commences. While Sprint’s yet to give an official release date, Wirefly (somewhat reliable in the past) does say the ICS / Sense 4 slab will be shipping on May 18th. Be sure to hit either of the source links below to get your pre-order on.

Update: And just like that, Wirefly’s May 18th date has mysteriously vanished. What does it mean?

Nielsen: Over 50 percent of US mobile users own smartphones, Android and iPhone sitting pretty

iPhone, Galaxy Nexus, Titan

Smartphones crossed an important milestone in March, based on Nielsen’s estimates. Just over half of cellphone owners in the US — 50.4 percent, to be exact — had a smartphone of some kind, making dumbphones the minority for the first time. The smartphone tale of the tape shows that the OS split has largely tapered off since February. Android has only moved slightly and still sits atop the heap, claiming 48.5 percent of users, but Apple hasn’t had to worry given that 32 percent of smartphone owners use an iPhone.
