Samsung Cloud Gaming Brings Console-Quality Games to Your Smart TV

0 Comments/ in samsung, Uncategorized / by Emily Price
June 5, 2012

Soon you’ll be able to play console-quality games on your Samsung Smart TV without having to actually own a gaming console.

Samsung Cloud Gaming will stream a mix of family-friendly and AAA video games directly to Samsung Smart TVs with no need to download or install anything to start playing, the company announced Tuesday.

The service is possible through a new partnership between Samsung and Gaikai, a leading cloud-based video game platform provider.

“We could not be more thrilled to be working with Samsung” said David Perry, CEO of Gaikai Inc. “Samsung Cloud Gaming will greatly expand the reach of the best games our industry can provide, then make them just as accessible as… Continue reading…

Gaikaipowered cloud gaming coming to Samsung Smart TVs

At this point, most people (in the tech world, at least) are quite familiar with Gaikai’s cloud gaming platform, which lets users have a not-quite-console quality gaming experience on any device. The technology has found its way onto Facebook and in LG TVs, and now Gaikai’s bringing gaming to Samsung TVs, too. Called Samsung Cloud Gaming (SCG), it’ll be available via the Smart Hub on Samsung 7000 series and up Smart TVs in the US this summer. The technology powering SCG is the same as what’s behind LG’s service, but Sammy’s customized the UI to suit its sensibilities. We got a chance to speak with Gaikai CEO David Perry about his company’s latest partnership, so join us after the break for more.

Update: Video hands-on added after the break. We also demoed the service playing Darksiders, and aside from some mild stuttering the button masher was smooth enough to play using a USB-connected controller. We’re told that the software we viewed isn’t final, so it may not reflect the final look.

AT&T officially acknowledges Samsung Exhilarate’s existence, will be available on June 10th for $50

AT&T announces Samsung Exhilarate still exists, will be available June 10th for $50

It’s alive! The budget-friendly Samsung Exhilarate was announced alongside several other LTE phones at the AT&T Developer Summit in January, and we never heard about it since. Pricing, availability and most other major details were left out of the conversation, but it turns out this isn’t another case of the Skyrocket HD (a phone that was announced at the same time but was eventually cancelled). The Exhilarate will finally arrive on June 10th and can be yours for $50.

So what about the missing details AT&T’s kept tight-lipped about for the last five months? The Exhilarate sports a 4-inch Super AMOLED panel, Android 2.3 (as far as we can tell from the press images), 1.2GHz dual-core Scorpion CPU, LTE connectivity, 5MP rear camera capable of taking 720p video, a 1.3MP front-facing cam and UL Platinum certification. Essentially, this particular status from Underwriters Laboratories means the phone passed a set of minimum requirements and can now be considered “environmentally preferable.” The rear casing is made from 80 percent recycled material, and the device itself is slated to undergo AT&T’s new eco-rating system which will launch later this summer. We can’t imagine that too many people will exemplify the feeling portrayed in the device’s name, but we’re glad this one didn’t mysteriously disappear.

Samsung demos Series 5 Ultra Touch and Series 5 Ultra Convertible Ultrabooks, we go handson

Well, look at what we have here! We just swung by Samsung’s booth at Computex, and the outfit is showing off not one, but two touch-enabled variations of its Series 5 Ultrabooks. These include the Ultra Touch, a classic clamshell laptop, along with the Ultra Convertible, whose 13-inch display folds all the way back (not unlike the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga). Both devices are on their way stateside; it’s just not clear when or how much they’ll cost. Until then, we’ve got hands-on preview photos below, along with detailed impressions and a pair of walk-through videos. So join us, won’t you?

Samsung shows off Series 7 all-in-one PC with slim design and metal stand, stays mum on specs (update: hands-on photos)

Samsung shows off Series 7 allinone PC with slim design and metal stand, stays mum on specs update handson photos

In addition to that Series 5 laptop / tablet hybrid, Samsung has one other goodie up its sleeve. The company is also teasing a Series 7 all-in-one PC, a desktop that we can only imagine was built to run Windows 8 (notice that those cheeky blokes in Sammy’s marketing department aren’t even showing a Win8 screen in that lone photo you see up there). As with the Series 5 hybrid, Samsung is revealing maddeningly little about specs. We do know it responds to both voice input and hand gestures — both uncommon features for a desktop, especially in that combination. We don’t even know the screen size or resolution, but we’re told this panel is capable of recognizing up to 10 fingers at once. Lastly, Samsung says the stand is made of metal and the display is slim, but you probably already gathered that. And that, folks, is all she wrote, but we’ll be sure to report back with more details between now and when this goes on sale, presumably sometime after Win8 ships this fall.

Samsung teases Series 5 Hybrid PC, a Windows 8 tablet with magnetic keyboard dock and pen support (update: hands-on photos)

Samsung teases Series 5 Hybrid PC, a Windows 8 tablet with magnetic keyboard dock and pen support

You wanted Windows 8 tablet / laptop mash-ups, you got ‘em! On the heels of some rather inventive product launches from Acer and ASUS here at Computex, Samsung is teasing a Win8 device of its own, the Series 5 Hybrid PC. For now, Samsung’s not sharing many technical details — we don’t even know the screen size! — but the concept, at least, is self-explanatory: this is a Transformer-like tablet that slots into an accompanying keyboard dock. In an interesting twist, though, this device doesn’t make use of your run-of-the-mill latch mechanism; instead, the slate attaches magnetically.

The Hybrid is rated for 10 hours of battery life and has a pair of 2- and 8-megapixel cameras. It also supports pen input, and will come bundled with the same S-Pen and S-Memo software used on the Galaxy Note 10.1 (but modified for Windows, of course). This might be a good time to clarify that unlike the 10.1 (or any other Galaxy Tab, for that matter), this is not an ARM-based slate, but rather, an X86 PC. This means, of course, that it runs full Windows 8, and not just the RT version. As it happens, Engadget had the chance to check out a prototype in advance of the launch, and it was running a two-watt Intel Clover Trail CPU. At the time, a Samsung rep told us the company was considering an ultra low voltage notebook-grade processor. Other possible specs: a 1080p display option, with some lower, unspecified resolution offered as well. Lastly, the early model we saw had a USIM slot, a microSD reader and a Superspeed USB port. Keep in mind, though, that all these details are subject to change.

Back when we got a sneak peek at the Hybrid, we handled a non-powered unit, and members of the press were not permitted to take photos or video that day. We can’t speak to the software experience, then, but we did find the build quality to be solid. If the idea of a magnetic hinge gives you the willies, this one seemed quite sturdy — we don’t see the slate slipping out of its cradle without any effort on the part of the user. At 747 grams (1.65 pounds) and 9mm (0.35 inches) thick, it feels denser than similar-looking products like the ASUS Transformer Prime, but then again, this is a fully functioning PC. Though Samsung won’t confirm the screen size, a quick once-over told us it measures between 10 and 11 inches diagonally, matching other Win8 tablets announced this week. For now, this blend of facts and educated guesses will have to suffice, but we’ll naturally hit you back with more particulars as we hear them.

Gallery: Samsung teases Series 5 Hybrid PC hands-on

Update: Samsung reps staffing the company’s Computex booth confirmed that the screen measures 11 inches.

Samsung Galaxy S III vs. iPhone 4S: Which One Breaks First? [VIDEO]

0 Comments/ in iphone, samsung, Uncategorized / by Peter Pachal
June 4, 2012

The Samung Galaxy S III has a lot of cool features, including a couple of “first evers” among smartphones, like its voice-activated wake-up feature. But is it just as revolutionary in its durability?
To find out, SquareTrade, an independent warranty provider, subjected Samsung’s hot new Android phone to a drop test. For comparison, it also dropped another hot phone with which you may be familiar: the iPhone 4S.
It’s actually a three-part test. First, SquareTrade dropped the phone from ear level — certainly a fair test since a drop while making a call is probably the worst case scenario because of the phone’s height above the ground. Next, they gave both p… Continue reading…

AT&T announces Samsung Galaxy S III plans: preorders begin June 6th for $200, will be available in red

STUB AT&T announces Samsung Galaxy S III

Sure, it’s late to the Samsung Galaxy S III announcement party, but we suppose AT&T is letting the other carriers duke it out for the attention first before it came out with its own revelation. Now that it has the platform all to itself, AT&T has now officially made its intentions known. The Snapdragon S4-powered device will offer three color options and will be available for pre-order on June 6th starting at $200 for a 16GB model (shipping dates and retail availability have not been announced yet). What’s the third hue choice, alongside the white and blue? Red. That’s right: seeking ways to customize the Galaxy S III as a means of differentiating itself from the other four Galaxy S III devices, AT&T will be proudly selling its new flagship smartphone in glorious red.

There’s a bit of disappointing news to go with the good, however — at least, if you’re a fan of more storage. AT&T will sell only the 16GB model, and anyone seeking a total of 32GB will need to go with a $39 16GB microSD card. Aside from this, everything else appears to be exactly the same as the rest of the pack, which is encouraging news for anyone who wishes US carriers would shift to a state of existence as dumb pipes.

Samsung Galaxy Note 101 caught on camera with Spen slot, quadcore CPU

Last time the winds of hearsay rustled our tech feathers, word was Samsung had pegged its Tab 2 10.1 for a quad-core CPU transplant. While the company went on the record to shoot down that pesky rumor, it remained suspiciously mum where the Galaxy Note 10.1 was concerned. Now, thanks to a brief video demo over on German site All About Samsung, it appears the formerly dual-core slate refresh we had a chance to preview back in March could, indeed, be set for a processor swap. Though it’s still far from official, the new Note 10.1 shown above looks to be sharing not only some of the Galaxy S III’s specs — quad-core Exynos processor with Mali 400 MP GPU and a TouchWizzed Android 4.0.4– but also that formerly problematic Pebble Blue finish. And much to our delight, it also appears as if the company’s revised the tablet’s design slightly, adding in a convenient slot on the lower left hand side for S-Pen stowage. Not convinced by mere words alone? The head past the break for video evidence of this purported hardware upgrade.

Apple lords over tab market in Q1 2012, Samsung bumps Kindle in scuffle for scraps

apple-tab-market-in-q1-2012-samsung-bumps-kindle

If it’s the end of a financial quarter, there must be another chronicle of the iPad swelling Apple’s money pile and its tablet competitors trying in vain to chip off more for themselves. And with 11.8 million shipped by Cupertino out of 18.2 million slates total, that’s pretty much the case — with a minor shuffle of those “other guys” the only other tidbit. To wit, Amazon’s Kindle petered into third spot only a quarter after trumpeting its ascension to number two, and Samsung displaced it as distant runner-up with sales of 1.1 million tabs. The most wide-eyed in the Korean maker’s camp might point to Apple being topped in the rate of 3G / 4G tablets sold, but with eight times the sales of WiFi models, we doubt Apple’s number-crunchers are losing any sleep over it. Per usual, the full report can be seen in the source link.

Baidu custom ROM for Nexus S swaps Google's apps for Baidu's own, gets few fans in Mountain View

The Nexus S was supposed to be the definition of Google’s perfect phone circa late 2010, so we can’t imagine that too many at the Googleplex are enthused with the potential impact of a new custom ROM from Baidu. China’s search giant has replaced many of the stock Google apps in Android 4.0 with its own examples, ranging from media players through to navigation. Google will take some consolation from knowing that the firmware can’t be pushed out over the air and has to be sideloaded over USB. All the same, with plans from Baidu to expand to other Android 4.0 devices, we can’t help but think Google faces a minor Kindle Fire effect where it’s cut out from its own ecosystem.

A different shade of Galaxy S III spotted in Germany (video)

A different shade of Galaxy S III spotted in Germany

While Europeans earnestly wait for their pre-ordered pebble blue superphones to appear, a hands-on video from Germany is purportedly showing us a darker, grayer version of Samsung’s Galaxy S III. While the skeptic in us would say it’s just a lighting issue, the back cover looks perceptibly different to the blue-hued slab we spent time with during its big reveal. It looks almost monochromatic — and even shinier, if that’s possible. The color borders on gun-metal gray and we have to admit, we’re already a little smitten. Samsung’s had issues bringing the blueish hue to the masses, so this could turn out to be the new non-white color option. Black and white is a bit played out, so our fingers are crossed that we’ll get to have our pebble-colored cake and eat it. Check out the possible new look in a hands-on video after the break — and bring on the hot pink option.

US Cellular announces its Galaxy S III plans, preorders begin June 12, retail availability in July

The flood continues. We knew as of early this morning that regional carrier US Cellular would be carrying the Samsung Galaxy S III, and we now have a few more details to add to our interest. The flagship device will be available for pre-order June 12th and is going to be in stores and online sometime in July. The pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but US Cellular mentions that this will be known as soon as the presale begins, and we wouldn’t be shocked if it fell right inline with Sprint’s price points ($199 for 16GB and $249 for 32GB). Once the purchasing magic begins, you’ll have your choice of a 16GB model in Marble White or Pebble Blue, or a 32GB version in only the paler shade. The carrier also plans to start pushing its fledgling LTE network into new areas to support its latest handset coup. For a few more details, most of which will probably sound pretty familiar at this point, check out the PR after the break.

TMobile brings Samsung Galaxy S III to stores on June 21st

T-Mobile US isn’t letting Verizon bask in the spotlight for too long, as it just announced that June 21st will be the magic date it begins offering the Samsung Galaxy S III in stores. From what we can tell, this particular flavor of the device has seemed to escape a good chunk of carrier influence, with the traditional home button model staying intact. As we’ve been expecting, the GSIII will come in 16 and 32GB models (price is still an unknown at the moment, though $200 and $250 respectively seems to be the popular choice so far), run on a Snapdragon S4 dual-core CPU clocked at 1.5GHz and offer an impressive 2GB RAM. It doesn’t appear that T-Mo will be allowing pre-orders through official retail channels, but you can sign up for a reminder by going to the link below. But don’t worry if you forget to do that — we’ll keep you posted on all the updates no matter what.

Verizon takes Samsung Galaxy S III pre-orders June 6th, starting at $200

Verizon Galaxy S III teaser

Samsung confirmed the initial US carriers for the Galaxy S III, and we’re now getting the deluge of details from the carriers themselves. Verizon is first at bat and will start taking your pre-orders on June 6th at 7AM ET. The company is coy on the actual ship date, but it’ll ask $200 for a 16GB version on a contract, and a slightly higher $250 if you really need 32GB from the very start. Its edition is a dead ringer in looks for the international model outside of the “4G LTE” stamp, but it carries both the 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 and 2GB of RAM as the Canadian models. You can take a peek at the full details first-hand after the break.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Coming to Five Major U.S. Carriers in June

Samsung’s flagship Android smartphone, the Galaxy S3, will become available with AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and U.S. Cellular in June, Samsung has announced.

The Galaxy S3 is already available in several European countries, and the international version of the device can be bought on Amazon for $799.

Most users, however, will be willing to sign a contract with one of the carriers to shave that price to a more manageable figure. We don’t know exactly what it is though, as pricing and availability will be announced by the carriers themselves “in the coming weeks.”

As for the device itself, it is one of the most anticipated Android smartphones this year, with a 4.8-inch display, an 8.6mm thin profile, an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, a 1.4 GHz quad-core CPU and the latest version of Android — Ice Cream Sandwich.

Samsung Galaxy S III coming to AT&T, Sprint, TMobile, Verizon Wireless and US Cellular this month

Official is as official does… right? In a bid to one-up the Galaxy S II’s launch here in the States, Samsung has just announced that five carriers will soon have their own customized versions of the Galaxy S III. And by “soon,” we mean “beginning in June.” AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and US Cellular are all in line to take part, with exact pricing and availability to be announced by each of the five carriers in the coming weeks. We are, however, told to expect on-contract prices as low as $199, and it sounds as if all five variants will keep the same 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display.

Naturally, S-Beam, S-Voice, Smart Stay and Android 4.0 (with TouchWiz) will be onboard, with Qualcomm’s 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 at the heart of each matter. We’re told to expect 2GB of RAM across the board, with Gorilla Glass 2.0 guarding against your clumsiness. Moreover, we’re reminded of the mythical Pebble Blue hue (which will be available alongside Marble White), with a removable 2,100mAh battery and 16GB / 32GB capacity options. Looking to learn more? There’s a bit left just beyond the break, but the real deets will be pouring out in the weeks ahead from the carriers themselves.
