AT&T's HTC One X back on sale: now up for grabs online, coming to retail stores on June 10th

Now that the ITC conundrum is partially over, it’s time for the HTC One X to get back on track and make its way onto AT&T shelves yet again. For starters, the Rethink Possible outfit has the Sense 4-loaded handset up for grabs now via its online store, while brick and mortar shops are said to be expecting it as soon as June 10th. Other than that, pricing remains the same, which means you’ll still have to shell out those $200 (with a two-year deal, naturally), or $550 without a commitment — and, if you’re feeling like spending some additional cash, you could grab that Media Link HD wireless dongle on your way out for an extra $90. Sound good? The source links below will take you there.

Facebook lets advertisers easily buy mobile-only ads, our news feeds feel slightly unclean

HTC Status review

Facebook’s fistfuls of cash come almost exclusively from advertising, but virtually none of it comes from mobile. Much to its delight and our chagrin, that’s changing. Prospective advertisers now only need to use the social network’s ready-made ad interface and Power Editor to back a sponsored news feed story on mobile devices, instead of getting the explicit say-so from Facebook. It’s not open season on Facebook’s mobile apps: we won’t see dating ads rear their pretty heads in Facebook Camera anytime soon. All the same, it does mean the social stream on your HTC Status will be a bit less than pristine from now on.

Nokia Maps for Windows Phone makeover brings friends' photos and reviews, favorites syncing

Nokia Maps is a cornerstone of the Lumia line, so it’s more than a little vital that the Windows Phone app keep up with the smartphone pack. The just-posted 2.0 update catches up in a big way to Google Maps on social location: travelers can now add reviews and photos to locations, both helping spot that French café and decide whether or not it’s worth a visit. If you’re that much in love with the cappuccino, you’ll be glad to know there’s now favorites syncing that will carry over to other Nokia phones as well as the web apps, should you moonlight with Android or an iPhone. The chronically lost even have something to cheer about, since the new app makes it possible to pin directions, not just locations, to the home screen. Upgrading is free; provided you’ve addressed the small matter of owning a Lumia phone, there’s every good reason to check Windows Phone Marketplace and get to downloading.

Virgin Mobile may be next up for pay-as-you-go iPhone parade on July 1st

iPhone 4S Sprint review

It might be that Cricket’s iPhone deal is just the tip of the prepaid iceberg: insiders reportedly say that Sprint’s pay-as-you-go brand Virgin Mobile will be taking the Apple plunge as well. Details of what it will cost are still very much unknown, although we’d look to Cricket’s $500 unsubsidized iPhone 4S and $35 monthly plan as strong clues. If the WSJ‘s connections are accurate, though, we could see a Virgin iPhone for the US as soon as its northern neighbor Canada blows out the birthday candles, on July 1st. At this rate, the only American carrier of any kind without an iPhone will be T-Mobile, and it’s clear that this glaring exception is eager to hop onboard.

Apple possibly held back by Google for years on iOS’ Maps features, might bring turn-by-turn nav to WWDC

June 5, 2012

The tales of Apple possibly dumping Google Maps as the backend for iOS 6′s Maps app are gathering steam, but we’re now learning just how much forethought may have gone into the split. According to the WSJ‘s favorite tipsters, “people familiar with the matter,” Apple isn’t just hoping to spurn Android — it’s reacting to push-back it got years earlier. Google supposedly delayed Street View, and blocked Google Maps Navigation outright, as it wasn’t getting the limelight for branding and couldn’t push in social tracking services that tend to make a privacy-sensitive Apple jittery, like Latitude. The August 2009 buyout of Placebase was ground zero for Apple’s shift, which saw subsequent deals for Poly9 and C3 Technologies flesh out the project.

As for the end results? They supposedly include turn-by-turn navigation that mimics an “in-car GPS device,” and regular mapping should now be free to integrate with other apps: Calendar might warn you if a traffic jam on Interstate 280 will affect that appointment at 1 Infinite Loop, as an example. We might not have long to wait for the truth behind the new tips and earlier leaked shots, as the contacts believe Apple could show its Maps overhaul when WWDC starts next week.

SanDisk’s new iNAND Extreme flash storage forms part of Tegra 3 ‘reference designs’

SanDisk readies iNAND storage for tablets and smartphones, forms part of Tegra 3 'reference designs'SanDisk has added a little more detail to its latest iteration of embeddable flash storage, iNAND Extreme. Built through 19 nm process technology, the flash memory is geared towards portables like smartphones and tablets, with SanDisk mentioning both Android and Windows RT in the same breath. Capacities will range from 16GB to 128GB and it’s apparently already a core part of NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 reference designs — and we all know quad-core processor deserve the best. The 128GB version is capable of up to 45 MB/sec write and 100 MB/sec read speeds. SanDisk also mentions a new pair of PCIe-based SSDs for enterprise. Up to five of the Lightning PCIe SSAs (200GB / 400GB) can be connected together in a single system, while SanDisk also offers up a caching option for Windows users. You just have to be willing to stump up some more cash for the company’s own FlashSoft software on top of a $1,350 entry price. The full details on both are waiting right after the break.

Foursquare teases a giant mobile app remake, mayors quiver in anticipation

Foursquare has been steadily adding to its mobile app since its check-in service took off. A major remake hasn’t been in the cards, however, until now. The company is teasing a major update this week that will reflect Foursquare’s shift from simply broadcasting your coffee shop invasions to recommending where to go next. From what little the company is willing to let slip in advance, the emphasis will be on spotting popular destinations on the map as well as more alluring location pages. There’s still several questions left open, including an exact release date as well as whether or not the update is coming to more than one platform on day one; we’ve only seen iOS shots so far. Still, it’s looking as though fans of Oink and Yelp will find something to like in Foursquare very shortly.

Baidu custom ROM for Nexus S swaps Google’s apps for Baidu’s own, gets few fans in Mountain View

Baidu custom ROM for Nexus S swaps Google's apps for Baidu's own, gets few fans in Mountain View

The Nexus S was supposed to be the definition of Google’s perfect phone circa late 2010, so we can’t imagine that too many at the Googleplex are enthused with the potential impact of a new custom ROM from Baidu. China’s search giant has replaced many of the stock Google apps in Android 4.0 with its own examples, ranging from media players through to navigation. Google will take some consolation from knowing that the firmware can’t be pushed out over the air and has to be sideloaded over USB. All the same, with plans from Baidu to expand to other Android 4.0 devices, we can’t help but think Google faces a minor Kindle Fire effect where it’s cut out from its own ecosystem.

ASUS shows off its Open Cloud Computing with a dash of sci-fi, teen angst (video)

ASUS shows off its Open Cloud Computing with a dash of scifi, teen angst video

ASUS has been touting Open Cloud Computing as the glue that unites its new devices at Computex, but it hasn’t been very specific as to what that meant. Rather than just give us the dry details, though, ASUS has chosen to sum it all up in a slightly surreal video illustrating how its cloud solves the travails of friends and family. Web storage comes up often for sharing files across the Internet — apparently, by reaching through clouds — and is joined by Open Help for sorting out frustrated parents, Open Link for helping woe-is-me teenagers finish high school projects on their Padfones, Vibe for sharing media and Waveface for coordinating a thank you event with everyone. Apart from being a bit trippy, the promo has more than a small dose of science fiction: although we’ve seen some future product concepts from ASUS before, we’re pretty sure there’s no holographic watches and virtual assistants on the short-term roadmap. If you can reconcile that with practical reality, you’ll be ready for the video after the story jump.

Verizon takes Samsung Galaxy S III pre-orders June 6th, starting at $200

Verizon Galaxy S III teaser

Samsung confirmed the initial US carriers for the Galaxy S III, and we’re now getting the deluge of details from the carriers themselves. Verizon is first at bat and will start taking your pre-orders on June 6th at 7AM ET. The company is coy on the actual ship date, but it’ll ask $200 for a 16GB version on a contract, and a slightly higher $250 if you really need 32GB from the very start. Its edition is a dead ringer in looks for the international model outside of the “4G LTE” stamp, but it carries both the 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 and 2GB of RAM as the Canadian models. You can take a peek at the full details first-hand after the break.

Android Angst: Ice Cream Sandwich Adoption Moving Slowly [VIDEO]

0 Comments/ in android, mashable video, smartphones, Uncategorized / by Mashable Video
June 2, 2012

What’s the holdup with the new version 4.0 of Android, affectionately known as Ice Cream Sandwich? Announced on October 19, 2011, the new version so far only accounts for 7.1% of active Android devices according to Android Developers — nearly eight months later.

Take a look at this video where we examine why this is happening. Even though Android dominates smartphones with an overwhelming 65% market share, it’s a shame it’s not capable of putting its best foot forward on a wider scale — at least not yet.

How long do you think it will take before Android 4.0 is installed on a majority of Android handsets? Why do you think this has happened?

BlackBerry Music Gateway goes on sale, brings a little NFC into your life

BlackBerry Music Gateway

RIM showed off the BlackBerry Music Gateway with the promise of a June release, and it’s clearly not wasting any time: the first of the month has seen the tiny audio bridge go on sale. It’ll set you back $50, but you’ll get a conduit for music from any Bluetooth-packing device, whether or not it has that signature 7-dot logo on the back. The extra-special BlackBerry affection comes through NFC support, where equipped phones like the Bold 9930 can pair faster through a friendly tap. Buying straight from the source will lead to a one- to two-week wait, but if you’re looking for the most polished way to share your musical tastes from a BlackBerry or PlayBook, it’s likely worth being patient.

Chipworks, iFixit tear down the Galaxy S III for all to see, spot iPhone 4S' camera sensor hanging around

You’ve picked up the Galaxy S III. You’ve grabbed the source code. But you probably like the quad-core monster too much to tear it down, which is why Chipworks and iFixit have taken to disassembling the phone for themselves to look for any surprises. We certainly knew to expect the Exynos 4 Quad and 2,100mAh battery, but we now know how Samsung is claiming a boost to speed and image quality for the 8-megapixel camera: it’s using the same Sony-made, backside-illuminated CMOS sensor that we’ve seen since the Xperia Arc and made its biggest splash in the iPhone 4S. Just don’t anticipate replacing many components yourself. That 4.8-inch screen is not only permanently attached to the glass, but to the phone frame, leaving any face-first accidents a dicey fix. We’re expecting a few more discoveries once iFixit gives the Galaxy S III a second scan, but the source will give you everything there is to know right now.

ComScore: Android’s US share dips ever so slightly, iPhone slowly marching up

ComScore Android's US share dips ever so slightly, iPhone slowly marching up

Here’s a minor surprise: Android slipping at all in US market share. Although it saw just a tiny drop of two tenths of a point from where it was in March, and still saw a gain over January, Google’s platform was down to 50.8 percent in April. Nothing dramatic enough to make Mountain View worry, as such, but definitely a sharp break from the rapid growth of last year. Apple could meanwhile claim a small victory for the month as a result by continuing to grow — even if we wouldn’t call its 31.4 percent iPhone share a revolution. Of the other platforms, only Microsoft had anything to crow about, as the Lumia 900 launch brought Windows Phone back just over the four percent mark.

The positions among individual cellphone makers as a whole didn’t budge in April, and whatever losses came to Android’s partners in that area were spread evenly across top-dog Samsung as well as LG and Motorola. Perhaps the biggest twist was HTC holding its ground at a steady six percent, which hints that the HTC One S’ arrival at T-Mobile might have been just the ticket to keeping Taiwan in the fight.
