Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 goes on sale melding quad-core Ivy Bridge and GeForce GTX 660M

Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 goes on sale melding quadcore Ivy Bridge and GeForce GTX 660M

The Y580 led the avalanche of Lenovo IdeaPads unveiled at CES; its dependence on both Intel Ivy Bridge processors and Kepler-based NVIDIA graphics kept it out of the spotlight for some time, but it’s now ready to ship out. The finished 15.6-inch laptop skews very clearly to gamers and other performance mavens. The range starts off with a quad 2.3GHz Core i7, a GeForce GTX 660M and 8GB of RAM. Any heavier outlays of cash upgrade the display resolution, optical drive and storage to as much as a 1080p screen, a Blu-ray combo drive and a 1TB hard drive with a companion 32GB SSD for good measure. None of them will win a contest for sheer portability, but a tight official price spread between $1,299 and $1,549 ($1,039 and $1,239 on sale) guarantees that it won’t be hard to get exactly the PC you need to play Spec Ops.

Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M5 handson video

Acer’s Aspire Timeline Ultra M5 laptops are hardly a mystery — they’ve already been announced for the UK — but until now we haven’t had the chance to handle one in person. Luckily for us, then, both the 14- and 15-inch models are on display here at Computex, right alongside the similar M3 Ultrabook we reviewed earlier this year. Like the M3, they pack NVIDIA’s Kepler-based GeForce GT640M graphics and can be configured with solid-state drives, but the M5′s design is decidedly more polished, with a brushed metal finish, narrower bezels and backlit keyboard. Nonetheless, some things haven’t changed: the keyboard layout is the same, as is the 1366 x 768 TN display and thin chassis, which measures around 20mm thick. No word on availability beyond what we already know, but for now enjoy the hands-on photos and comparison video.

AVADirect and Eurocom laptops hop on the GeForce GTX 680M bandwagon

NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 680M has made an impact in Alienware and Origin PC laptops so far. Some of us like our mobile gaming a little more barebones, however, and both AVADirect as well as Eurocom are taking their turn at carrying the graphics powerhouse in portables using heavily customizable, Clevo-made designs. AVADirect’s 15.6-inch P150EM and 17.3-inch P170EM, as well as their matching Eurocom Racer 2.0 and Neptune 2.0 brethren, can take advantage of all 1,344 processing cores and that abundant 4GB of RAM. Do brace for a hit to the pocketbook for the sake of that increase in frame rate: although Eurocom is staying quiet early on, AVADirect is charging a $536 upgrade price on top of any given configuration.

Samsung refreshes Series 9, 5 and 3 laptops, unveils two new Series 5 systems

June 6, 2012

We knew Series 9 laptops with Ivy Bridge weren’t too far off when Samsung prematurely leaked the news on its own site. Well, if you’ve been patiently awaiting a refresh, your day has come: the company held a press event in New York City today where it showed off both the 13- and 15-inch models with Intel’s third-generation Core processors in tow. Hardware-wise, there aren’t many changes to what you saw on the earlier models, though Samsung added Bluetooth 4.0 support and shaved 0.1 inches off the silhouette.

Along with the Series 9, Samsung’s Series 5 laptops are getting new Ivy Bridge innards. The only changes besides the processor upgrade are Bluetooth 4.0 support and a USB 3.0 socket. And the low-end Series 3 isn’t getting overlooked entirely either: the company is upgrading the line to dual-core Sandy Bridge CPUs (previous models ran Pentium units).

But that’s not all: on top of all those refreshes, the company has two new Series 5 machines. The Series 5 500 starts at $800 and offers a 14-inch 1366 x 768 display, 500GB of storage space and a third-gen Core i5 CPU. The 15.6-inch Series 5 costs $100 more and features a Core i7 Ivy Bridge processor along with a 750GB hard drive. Both models also include NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M graphics. Sammy says they will be up for order by mid-June.

Alienware M17x and M18x get NVIDIA GTX680M graphics option

Never one to let high-powered mobile gaming hardware pass it by, Alienware has announced that its endlessly-tweaked M17x and M18x will both get the chance to dance with NVIDIA’s latest GPU belle. The refreshed M17x can be augmented with the GeForce GTX 680M alongside an option for NVIDIA 3D Vision, while the M18x can sample the same Kepler delights in either single or dual-card SLI configurations. Both customization options are promised to arrive before the end of the month — ready for all those games we’ve just seen at E3.

NVIDIA details top-tier GeForce GTX 680M Kepler GPU for Ultrabooks, other laptops

DNP EMBARGO NVIDIA details toptier GeForce GTX 680M Kepler GPU for Ultrabooks, other laptops

When NVIDIA took the wraps off its family of 28nm Kepler GPUs, it promised some mobile chips designed for Ultrabooks were soon to follow. Two and a half months later, we haven’t seen that many laptops running the 600M series, save for the Acer Aspire M5, which isn’t even on sale yet. Now, though, we’re about to see a lot more: in advance of Computex, a computer-centric trade show about to be overrun by Ultrabooks, NVIDIA is spilling details on the GeForce GTX 680M. As the top-tier offering in the mobile Kepler lineup, it packs a 720MHz engine clock, 1,344 CUDA cores and a 256-bit memory bus powering up to 4GB of GDDR5 RAM. As a refresher, all of Kepler’s GPUs make use of a new GPU Boost feature, which automatically increases the clock speed if the GPU isn’t already taxed. Meanwhile, VSync promises smoother rendering, with fewer jagged edges. So which PC makers are planning on using this thing? Well, Clevo is on board, and NVIDIA says to expect some fresh models from MSI and Alienware, too. Stay tuned, folks.

Nyko, NVIDIA out pair of PlayPad controllers for TegraZone gaming

If anything’s giving gaming juggernauts like Nintendo and Sony reason to look over their shoulders, it’s the recent uptick in mobile gaming. And much to those titans’ chagrin, Nyko’s come to stir the pot. Announced just today, the accessory maker’s outing a new line of wireless controllers made specifically for TegraZone titles. The peripherals, co-developed with NVIDIA, come in two distinct sizes: the PlayPad Pro for more traditional gaming with its dual analog controllers, d-pad and array of shoulder and face buttons, and the diminutive PlayPad with its dual analog sliders, carrying case and foldable stand for a truer portable experience. Though both controllers are designed for use with optimized Tegra 2 or 3 titles, legacy games will also be supported via the accessory maker’s free Playground app, which will also allow for customized layouts, as well as pre-sets for top titles on devices running Android 3.0 and up. No pricing or concrete release information’s been made available at the moment, with the company mentioning only a Fall launch for later this year. We’ll be sure to have a hands-on coming in the hours ahead, but for now, content yourself with the presser below.

Origin PC gives EON15-S, EON17-S a Kepler-based GeForce GTX 680M, games get a shot in the arm

Origin PC EON15-S

We hope you didn’t pull the trigger too quickly on one of the higher-end configurations for an EON15-S or EON17-S, because Origin PC just revamped its two gaming laptops extraordinaire with NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 680M — a chipset so fresh that NVIDIA itself hasn’t made a full public reveal just yet. Springing for the upgrade gives them a more miserly, 28-nanometer Kepler-based graphics engine that will no doubt be a bit gentler on battery life and heat than the GTX 675M of old. While it’s not shedding full light on NVIDIA’s technology, Origin PC’s adaptation is known to stuff in a whopping 4GB of video memory as well as 1,344 CUDA (graphics and general-purpose processing) cores, or more than many desktop-level graphics cards. The company hasn’t initially said how much it costs to equip NVIDIA’s latest, though the previous $197 upgrade to a 675M might just be a clue as to how much of a premium you’ll need to pay for a speed lift in Max Payne 3.

ASUS outs Tablets 600 and 810, Transformer-like slates running Windows 8

ASUS outs Tablet 600, a Transformerlike Slate running Windows RT

How many times have we posted a review of an ASUS Transformer tablet only to read comments that say, “Put Win8 on it and I’ll buy it.” Well, folks, it’s time to put your money where your mouth is. ASUS just announced the Tablet 600 and the Tablet 810, two Transformer-like slates running Windows 8. The difference? The 600 is an ARM-based tablet running Windows RT, while the 810 is a full-fledged Intel-powered model with full Windows 8 installed.

Like any Android-powered Transformer, the 600 packs a quad-core Tegra 3 chip, except it has twice the RAM (2GB). At the center of it all is a 10.1-inch, 600-nit, 1366 x 768 Super IPS+ display with viewing angles similar to what you’ll find on current Transformer tablets. Around back, it has an auto-focusing 8-megapixel camera with an LED flash, complemented by a 2-megapixel shooter up front. Other specs include WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 and your usual array of sensors, including GPS, a gyroscope, e-compass and, last but not least, NFC.

Gallery: ASUS Tablet 600 hands-on

Moving on, the 810 features an unspecified Intel Medfield CPU with 2GB of RAM. Like the 600, it has a Super IPS+ display with 1366 x 768 resolution, only the panel here is a bit larger, measuring 11.6 inches. What’s more, this guy makes use of a Wacom dual digitizer, allowing for both pen and finger input.

And that’s not all: we’ve got video demos of both devices — head past the break to see ‘em in action.

HP takes EliteBook W-series on a trip to Ivy Bridge, throws in Z220 Xeon workstation for good measure

HP takes EliteBook Wseries on a trip to Ivy Bridge, throws in Z220 Xeon workstation for good measure

HP has been rolling out a steady stream of Ivy Bridge-based upgrades over the past few weeks, and now it’s the turn of the pro-oriented EliteBook W-series to get the long-awaited upgrade. The 8470W, 8570W and 8770W draw on Intel’s faster dual Core i5 and quad Core i7 chips with respective choices of 14-, 15.6- and 17.3-inch screens. All of them pack AMD’s FirePro for video duties, although big spenders at the larger two sizes can opt for one of NVIDIA’s Quadro K-series graphics chips as well as an IPS-based display for color-sensitive work. Options will get you niceties such as a 24GB SSD cache, 3G and up to 16GB of RAM, although the EliteBooks’ signature military-spec resistances to dust, shock and temperature are thankfully par for the course. The range costs $1,329, $1,449 and $1,699 as you move up the screen size ladder, and all three will be available before June is over.

If you prefer your workstations to be more powerful but slightly more stationary, you’re still welcome in HP’s world: the equally fresh Z220 desktop carries Intel’s new quad-core Xeon E3 processor or, if that’s a bit too rich for your blood, a Pentium or quad Core i7. AMD FirePro and NVIDIA Quadro video cards are both made-to-order upgrades, and the modern underpinnings add both USB 3.0 as well as headroom for up to 32GB of RAM, if the fear of paging to disk keeps you awake at night. HP has both tower and small form factor versions of the Z220 starting off at $699, and they too will be ready to stretch IT budgets later this month.

Maingear's Pulse 11 gaming laptop starts shipping

Alienware’s M11x may be history, but as these things tend to go, there’s always someone willing to carry the torch. Maingear’s recently-introduced 11.6-inch Pulse 11 just so happens to be that rig in this here story, and those that’ve been waiting won’t have to twiddle their thumbs any longer. The company is shipping the bantam gaming rig in the US starting this week, offering a Core i7 CPU (or a Core i5, if you’d rather), NVIDIA’s Optimus graphics switching (tied to a GeForce GT 650 ‘Kepler’ GPU), 11.6-inch LED-backlit panel (1366 x 768), up to 16GB of DDR3 memory, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, a 9-in-1 card reader, six-cell Li-ion battery and plenty of ports. It’s starting at just $999, but speccing it out all proper like will send the asking price well north of that. (But trust us, it’s worth it.)

Tips have Acer, ASUS and Toshiba showing Windows 8 tablets at Computex, color us unsurprised

Windows 8 NVIDIA tablet

We know Computex will involve nothing less than a deluge of new laptops, but if we believe Bloomberg, it’s going to be a Windows 8 tablet-topia as well. Hot on the heels of the Windows 8 Release Preview, it’s claimed by the ever-present “people with knowledge of the matter” that Acer, ASUS and Toshiba will all be showing tablets with the new OS at the Taipei show. ASUS will reportedly get the star treatment at Microsoft’s keynote and show off Transformer-style Windows 8 tablets that we suspect are hinted at in ASUS’ slightly cryptic trailers. Processor loyalties could be split across the wider group, though: ASUS is said to be spreading the love by showing both an Intel-based tablet as well as one using NVIDIA’s ARM-powered Tegra line, but Acer’s previously rumored tablet is poised to go the Intel-only route, and Toshiba’s may exist solely in a TI OMAP-based ARM camp. It’s not apparent if anyone else will join the Windows 8 tablet frenzy, although Qualcomm is expected to show yet another Snapdragon-running test device. We’ll be on the ground at Computex next week, so you can be sure that we’ll give you the full rundown on Windows 8′s opening salvo.

ImageWith the Windows 8 Release Preview unveiled and available for all to download as of yesterday, you can bet that other companies are hustling to make their products compatible — and that doesn’t just go for hardware. NVIDIA announced that its new R302 graphics drivers have received Windows 8 certification, and they will be available for download early next week from GeForce.com. The drivers support all the new Windows Display Driver Model’s features along with NVIDIA 3D Vision and 3DTV Play products. Not only are the R302 drivers Windows 8-compatible, but they also only work with that generation of the OS. Other versions of Windows will continue to use NVIDIA’s R300 drivers.

MSI GT70 gaming laptop kindly updated with GeForce GTX 675M graphics

We sure hope you like surprises, because we’ve got a good one for you. It seems as if MSI wasn’t quite pleased with the killer graphics on its feature-loaded GT70 laptop and decided to give it a quick boost. Earlier today, the outfit announced its fresh gaming machine will now ship with NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 675M GPU instead of that already powerful GTX 670M found in our review unit. MSI says the change was driven by the company’s beliefs that “exceptional performance starts with outstanding components,” and, needless to say, we’re certain you’d agree. In case you’ve yet to grab one of these for yourself, you can do so at the source below.

Gigabyte makes 975g X11 official, claims 'world's lightest' 11.6-inch notebook

Well hello there again, Gigabyte X11. Hot on the heels of yesterday’s leak, Gigabyte’s just made its 11.6-inch X11 laptop (or is that an Ultrabook?) official. At 975g (2.15 pounds) it claims the title of “lightest notebook on earth” — and weighs even less on Mars. Design-wise, you’re looking at a 16.5mm (0.65 inches) to 3mm (0.19 inches) thin Macbook Air-like body made of real carbon fiber (!) with an aluminum hinge. Under the hood you’ll find unspecified third generation Intel Core processors (read Ivy Bridge), 4GB of DDR3 RAM, Mobile Intel HM77 Express chipset with Intel HD Graphics 4000, a 128GB SSD, WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0.

Ports include power, USB 2.0 and mini DisplayPort on the left side plus microSD, combo audio and USB 3.0 on the right. While the specs also mention gigabit Ethernet, there’s no sign of it anywhere in the press shots. The display is a 1366×768-pixel LED-backlit affair dotted with a 1.3 megapixel webcam. A chiclet keyboard, buttonless trackpad and 4730mAh 7.4V Li-ion polymer battery (likely sealed) complete the package. There’s no word on availability, but prices will range from $999 to $1299 with Windows 7 Home Premium and Professional in tow. Expect more information when we get our hands on this sexy beast at Computex next week.

Update: Our colleagues over at Engadget Chinese just got to spend some time with this svelte black slab. Take a look at the gallery below and hit the break for the hands-on video.

In addition, Gigabyte’s announcing two 14-inch laptops — the U2442 and U2440 — which feature third generation Intel Core processors and NVIDIA GeForce graphics. Unfortunately, we’re still busy drooling all over the X11 gallery, so we’ll direct you to the full PR after the break for the complete details.

Google Nexus tablet appears in benchmarks, appears to run on quad-core Tegra 3

ASUS’s seven-inch MeMo tablet has just ducked under the FCC’s gates, but some benchmark results for a purported Google and ASUS team-up could tally with the same device. According to the listing, the Google Asus Nexus 7 will arrive with NVIDIA’s quad-core Tegra 3 CPU, clocked at 1.3 GHz, while that (presumably) 7-inch screen packs a 768 x 1280 resolution. The hardware specs end there, but thanks to some investigation by Android Police and Rightware, it appears that this mystery tablet is running Android 4.1 — possibly the version number for Android’s next iteration, Jelly Bean. There are several more hints adding credence to these benchmark results, including the fish-based “grouper” codename, which follows the Stingray moniker that was handed to the Motorola Xoom ahead of its reveal. We’re just itching to know whether it’ll still manage a sub-$300 price-tag.

ASUS MeMO 370T 7-inch tablet clears the FCC, leaves no trace of Ice Cream or Jelly behind

The 7-inch ASUS Eee Pad MeMO ME370T we saw in early prototype form during CES just passed through the FCC. It’s still only showing WiFi radios with no trace of a cellular connection, although if it’s going to be the $249 standard bearer NVIDIA and ASUS were so excited about, that’s to be expected. A juicier rumor that has surfaced in the intervening period however, suggests this device will actually be released as a Google Nexus 7-inch tablet (or just sold from a Google store), and could even feature the next version of Android, codenamed Jelly Bean. It could also sell for as low as $149, although the cheaper reworked version might swap out the Tegra processor for one from Qualcomm. We didn’t spot anything in the filings to back that up, but you can paw through the PDFs yourself at the link below, or just get an idea of what it looks like in non-line drawn form with our gallery of pics from CES 2012.

DRS unveils trio of ruggedized tablets in Windows and Android flavors

Drops, shocks, heavy vibrations, dust, water and temperatures in the extremes — just the kind of punishment you’d expect a DRS Armor slab to put up with, and the firm’s latest do so without the briefcase-like look. With MIL-STD 810G certification and an IP65 rating, the 7-inch multi-touch slates can withstand some rough and tumble — though there’s no word if they can pass the tesla coil benchmark. At 1.3 pounds, the Android 3.2-loaded X7ad squeezes out eight hours of battery life with a 1GHz dual core Tegra 2 processor. Its Windows-minded doppelganger, the X7et, holds a six-hour charge, sports an Atom Z670 processor and tips the scales at just under 1.5 pounds. If the chunkier look strikes your fancy, the 12.1 inch X12kb has you covered — though at 5.5 pounds, it’s the lightest MIL-STD-810G certified convertible tablet currently available. The swivel screened slate has up to eight hours of battery life, a Core i5 560UMCPU processor, a polarized LCD glass display, a spillproof keyboard and touchpad in addition to a one-click stealth mode that disables light and sound for “covert operations.” With GPS, WiFi and Gobi Wireless Broadband options, all three of these are ready for missions at home and abroad, however you might need that stealth function to find out the (currently unspecified) pricing.
